They were drawn together by a shared concern: How do we navigate Nigeria\u2019s increasingly complex religious terrain without losing sight of our democratic ideals?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div He praised Nigeria\u2019s democratic resilience while cautioning against the misuse of religion in public life. Julius Ihonvbere<\/strong>, representing the Speaker of the House, decried the politicization of religion as a \u201cclear and present danger\u201d to democracy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Emir of Keffi, <strong>Alhaji Dr. Shehu Chindo III<\/strong>, encouraged religious leaders to educate followers on civic participation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>EU Ambassador <strong>Gautier Mignot<\/strong> reaffirmed Europe\u2019s commitment to religious freedom and its support for Nigeria\u2019s democratic journey.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Senator <strong>Adams Oshiomhole<\/strong> invoked Gandhi, calling for an end to cycles of hate and for a national embrace of tolerance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keynote: Framing the Problem<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Two speakers cut deep into the historical and constitutional roots of the problem:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Majeed Dahiru<\/strong> traced Nigeria\u2019s democratic crises back to post-independence missteps and the 1970s rise of political religion. His stark conclusion: &#8221;We must de-religionize governance and realign politics around shared socio-economic concerns&#8221;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dr. Sam Amadi<\/strong> explored the legal contradictions of religious sponsorship in a secular state. Participants identified clear systemic failings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Religion is being weaponized for political gain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There\u2019s a lack of interfaith dialogue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Voter apathy is often tied to fear, not indifference<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Public funds for religious trips violate the constitution<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The North continues to suffer the consequences of politicized religion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Path Forward: Recommendations with Teeth<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The event wasn\u2019t just diagnostic \u2014 it was visionary. Some key recommendations included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Strip religion out of governance forms<\/strong> \u2014 no more boxes for religion or ethnicity on official documents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reconfigure Nigeria\u2019s political system<\/strong> \u2014 move beyond ethnic and religious lines toward shared national goals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stop celebrating prosperity over principle<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transform worship spaces into centers of dialogue and peace<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Citizens must speak up and act<\/strong> \u2014 &#8220;say something when you see something&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The High-Level Discourse made it clear that Religion is not the enemy of democracy, but its misuse is.
