From 28-29 November 2018, the National Peace Committee headed by Gen. Abdulsalam A. Abubakar, GCFR, with its Secretariat at The Kukah Centre, held two important meetings at Nicon Luxury, Abuja.
The first meeting was to create the platform for the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) to brief members of the Peace Committee on its readiness for the 2019 General Elections. During the meeting, the issue of vote buying and selling became a matter of great concern as well as the escalating levels of insecurity in the country. The second meeting was between the members of the Peace Committee and all the registered political parties. The committee made available a draft of the National Peace Accord, which was signed on 11th December 2018 by all parties and their presidential candidates. The various political parties were also given the opportunity to express their concerns and provide strategies for mitigating the problems they foresaw with the 2019 elections.
During a session with the press, General Abdulsalam encouraged all and sundry to contribute to the success of the 2019 elections.
